LWV Supports Merit Selection

Merit Selection of Judges

Voter Information

The League of Women Voters supports nonpartisan merit selection of trial and appellate judges.

Until such merit selection becomes a reality, all candidates for elected judicial office should be permitted to cross-file.

We support retention elections for trial and appellate judges.

To put it in perspective: Pennsylvania is one of only six states that have partisan elections for state high courts and intermediate appellate courts and one of only 8 states that have partisan elections for trial courts.
